The KC station at the Kennedy Space Center
Cape Canaveral (actually Merritt Island), Florida
The KC station at the Kennedy Space
Center is located at the hub of the KSC Lightning Detection and Ranging (LDAR)
system. LDAR is an operational system that detects breakdown associated with
lightning. Weather forecasters at the Cape use LDAR data to determine whether
lightning is in the area. They don't want a repeat of Apollo 12! We'd like to
thank Mike Brooks, Frank Merceret, John Madura, Mary Baldwin, Tom Kelly, Michael Seay, and
Scott Marshall (and anyone else we've forgotten) for their help and cooperation.
Mike and his wife, Susan were especially hospitable, taking us out to dinner at Dixie
Crossroads. Yum.
